Strobist: Heart of the Beast

After a frustrating evening spent cleaning up and drying out my equipment, I began thinking out a new concept for the automotive shoot. Something I hadn’t done before. A little idea began brewing for a brochure-type shot with a wide-angle lens. I went back-to-basics for a simple setup that took about 20 minutes to model the lighting and took two final shots with the engine bay opened and closed which I would then combine in post.

Description: Strobist Boot Camp II Assignment #4(Transportation). 2nd attempt at assignment(this time under a roof and away from the daily downpour). First attempt tanked in the previous entry. Simple 2-shots with engine compartment opened and closed, then blended in Photoshop.

Lighting Setup: Single Elinchrom Ranger RX battery-pack powered 1100Ws strobe through Varistar 85cm Brolly on camera left. Reflectors placed on the camera right to provide some bounce on the engine and bumper.

Post-work: Essentially 2-shots processed in Photoshop by masking then brushed away to reveal layered engine bay.

Verification shot right here *hehehe*

Have a great weekend ya’ll!

Great shot and technique. About 11:30 last night I ran out to the garage and gave it a try. You can see my results here: http://blog.rickaustin.net/2009/09/minihero-disappearing-bonnet.html

Just click on the image for a larger view. How did you deal with the specular highlight problem? I was able to tame them because I shot in raw but I had pretty good highlights from the umbrella. You can see the detail in my blog post but it looks like you may have used a larger umbrella?

Thanks for the idea. Last night was just a quick test and I plan to do a better version soon.
